A drink to abide by

Calling all dudes, mistaken millionaires and bowling legends – get yourself to Lebowskis.

The White Russian drinks menu, GlasgowThis cosy pub in Finnieston has the biggest selection of White Russian cocktails in the city with about 20 different variations of the milky alcohol- infused drink.

And with cult movie names like The Gutter Ball, The Toe, The Nihilist and my favourite
The Da Fino (a perfect fusion of coffee, cinnamon and vanilla) – how can we resist this rich and satisfying treat?  We don’t.  We abide.

Every taste and then some

White Russian Cocktails, Lebowskis Bar GlasgowThere’s something for every taste, whether you’re more of a traditionalist sticking to your basic vodka, coffee liqueur and light cream variety or the more adventuresome who takes  The Dude’s favourite drink with a twist of mint, espresso, whiskey or even (gasp) Buckfast!

Not just a pretty caucasian

But Lebowski’s isn’t just a nod to film about a charismatic slacker or creamy tasting ‘caucasians’ – in fact the food is equally as fantastic and the friendly staff are top notch with not a single dressing gown in sight.

So what are you waiting for?  Whether you’ve seen the film or not, go on – abide and try out the perfect White Russian made in a variety of enticing and imaginative ways.

What was…. and what will be

It’s been a great year for About a City Glasgow.  OK admittedly we’ve only been doling out our wisdom for the last few months of 2011 – but none the less, it’s been a fabulous experience and we’ve had a truly wonderful time writing each and every blog.

Clock Tower in GlasgowNot that we’re trying to push 2011 out the door – but of course it’s at this time of year that we often reflect on what was and think about the year ahead.

And so on that note – we excitedly welcome 2012 and hope to check out even more places, spaces, events, eateries and everything in between.

A few things at the top of our 2012 ‘to do’ list – in no particular order- includes:

  • Finally finding and crowning the  champion of breakfasts in Glasgow.  But with a slew of worthy of contenders, this won’t be easy.  However, we’re willing to eat our fill of perfectly scrambled eggs, fluffy pancakes and happily drink freshly squeezed orange juice abundantly.
  • Admittedly a lot of our reviews have covered the best of the City Centre and the West End – but not wanting to overlook the glorious South we’ll be exploring the eateries and shops of Glasgow’s South Side and bringing the best of them to you.  Fanatical for bread, Tapa Bake House  is at the top of our list.
  • We’ve also heard rumblings about an exciting culinary concept, Boho Kitchen where  once a month three amateur chefs take on cooking in a professional restaurant. The menu is then marked by the customers!  So watch this space.
  • And speaking of events – in the New Year we hope to bring you even more things happening around this fine City – our curiosity has also been struck by the Spoken Word event  Words Per Minute kicking off at the Arches monthly.  Fusing  bursts of live music, spoken word, short film and theatrical performance – we’re hoping it’s attention-grabbing.
  • And as not to forget the lads – we hope to find the very best place for men to get their haircut in Glasgow.

Of course these are only a few of the things we’ll be exploring over 2012 – and we’re always open to suggestion so let us know about your favourite places to see, thing to do, eat and experience.

Lastly for all of those reading, following and sharing the blog – tweeting and getting in touch with terrific tips – we thank you.  You’re encouragement and enthusiasm keeps us going.

All the best in 2012

Where to raise your glass in Glasgow

Tis’ the season to be jolly.

And if you’re celebrating the festivities in Glasgow then you’re spoiled for choice when it comes to sipping tipple or enjoying a brew.

Like an old friend

Stairs at Old Hairdressers BarTucked away on Renfield lane (across from Stereo) is The Old Hairdressers Bar – organic industrial meets comfy snug.  Still relatively new, it has the feeling of being in transition and unfinished – yet still manages to be welcoming.

In fact it’s almost like going to an old friends, so feel free to climb the stairs and curl up on a couch in the mezzanine or gather round a table and soak up the soft glow of  candlelight.

And with beers starting from around  £2.50, you can linger a little longer without the worry of wearing out the wallet.

Winter wonderland

Step away from the rush,  escape from the festive frenzy and treat yourself to a hot cuppa joy.  Nestled amid the many stalls of the Christmas Market at St Enoch Square is the wonderful Gluhwein House – the perfect place to unwind and whittle away time.

The warmth and wonderful spicy sweet scent is enough to revitalise even the most tired feet and shattered shopper.  Ahhhh.

WEST is best

This independent brewery is slightly off the beaten path, housed in the magnificent Templeton Building off Glasgow Green.  Beautiful views and perfect brews are guaranteed at WEST Brewery.

In keeping with the German theme – this brewery produces all of its beers in accordance with the ‘Reinheitsgebot’ known as the ‘German Purity Law’ .  And if that doesn’t impress you , I  assure you that the award winning beers will – they even have a speciality Christmas beer!

A cocktail above all others

Admittedly from the outside this West George Street bar may not look like much and can be easy to miss.   But don’t judge  Blue Dog bar by its cover because inside their award winning team of mixologists are perfecting the art form of creating quality cocktails.

And while perfection may not come cheap (cocktails ranging from 6.95 to just under 9 quid) – this tiny piano bar is definitely the place to go for outstanding concoctions in Glasgow.

Even if you’re not into the entire jazz piano bar thing,   you can’t help but be impressed by the dexterity, skill and passion of the bartenders.  Not only do they know a thing or two about cocktails but clearly  they love what they do.  And if you’re still undecided, they may even whip you up a signature tipple to sip on!

Wherever you end up, be safe,  have a great time and enjoy!
